The Doc School began in 2009. Over the last two years, we have helped more than 200 local high school students create 40 short films about important local issues. Many alumni of the course are now studying film and journalism at top universities including NYU, CalArts, Chapman University, and San Francisco State.

This fall’s class is open to both first-time filmmakers and returning Doc Schoolers. Space is limited, so register soon!

The Class:

Award-winning filmmakers teach students how to produce, shoot and edit a documentary film. Over eight weeks, each small team of students produces a 3-5 minute film about a local issue. At the end of the course, they premiere their films at the Doc School Film Festival.

8 Saturday classes 11:00am-1:00pm at KVIE studios

-First Class- Saturday October 15th

-Film Festival- Sunday December 18th

Tuition: $390

The world premiere of our documentary Age of Champions at the 2011 Silverdocs Film Festival in Washington, DC was a big success! We premiered to a cheering audience of over 600 people. The screening was met with a standing ovation and the Washington Post called Age of Champions “infectiously inspiring.”

Parhat Ablat is the lead in our film and the founder of the Xinjiang Baseball Foundation in the Far Western Xinjiang Province of China.

Parhat’s university-level team has been invited to compete in an annual collegiate national tournament and he needs your help to get there. He also has started the only elementary school-level baseball teams in the region and plans to form a youth league. Please read the attached letter from Parhat and consider making a donation to his Foundation.

Thanks to all of you who attended the Doc School Film Festival! Students from across the Sacramento-area worked over the last couple months to complete eight short documentaries on important local topics. Their films premiered at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center in front of an audience of over 200 people!

Bikes, films, even a Doc School film premiere! Join us at to the 2nd Annual Bicycle Film Festival, which kicks off this Thursday May 12th at the Crocker Art Museum. As part of the BFF festivities on Saturday May 14th in Fremont Park, a special Doc School film about local bike maker Steve Rex will be shown at 9pm. Come support this growing festival and the Doc School!
